Bulgaria Reopens Repaired Hemus Highway

Hemus highway, which was badly damaged by the severe flooding that hit Bulgaria over the last two months, will be opened during the weekend. Milosh Potskov, head of the state Roads Agency, explained that traffic will be restored at the closed 35th kilometer of the major highway, connecting capital Sofia with the northern parts of Bulgaria. That section of the highway was closed because of a massive landslide. Potskov also said that all serious damages caused to the infrastructure would be repaired by the end of the next week. Torrential rains once again hit Bulgaria in August, causing the third wave of severe floods this summer. Over the past three months, the bad weather has affected two million people and claimed the lives of at least 20, while 10,000 have lost their homes. Material damages from the several waves of torrential rains and floods across large parts of Bulgaria have been estimated to exceed BGN 1 B. The total cost of the damages on Bulgaria's infrastructure amounts to BGN 350 M.

Minister Radoslav Gaydarski explained that the privatization will be transparent process which will be based on a preliminary evaluation. Bulgaria's President Meets Bush, Chirac in New York

Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov has been invited to the dinner organized by the US president for the world leaders participating in the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Local 24 Hours reported that besides George Bush President Parvanov will meet France's Head of State Jacques Chirac, who has invited all presidents of the states members of the Francophone society to a meeting. The 2005 World Summit, to be held from 14 to 16 September at United Nations Headquarters in New York, is expected to bring together more than 170 Heads of State and Government: the largest gathering of world leaders in history. Bulgaria's President Parvanov is to address the General Assembly on September 14, the newspaper says, underlining that the president will stress on the strengthening of the organization.

Bulgaria's Kranevo Packed with New Hotels

Kranevo, a small village at Bulgaria's northern seaside, seems to have become a hot spot for vacation complexes. The village saw the construction of 21 new tourism sites in 2004. This year, 34 freshly built hotels, restaurants and shops rose at the site. Local governor Krassimir Mihaylov, cited by the state news agency BTA, has said that the green light has been given for the construction of several new tourism complexes.

WB Vows Support for EU-Aspiring Bulgaria

The World Bank Director for Bulgaria Anand Seth hailed Bulgaria's new government and vowed support for its efforts for timely EU accession.
